Soccer Dog (and Other Haikus)

Cheering – Body

Hands banging metal,

like a chorus of drummers

beating on the stands.

Cheering – Breath

The voices cry out,

swelling over the field

like a rising wind.

Commercial Break

Despite the colors,

all I hear are white noises

saying to buy more.

Bad Calls

I can taste the blood

leaking from between my lips,

yet play continued.

Soccer Dog

My cry of despair,

followed shortly by a howl

from the seat by me.

Firework Dog (and Other Haikus)

Birthday

Firework displays

crest over the cool darkness

in celebration.

After Party

After the smoke passed,

the stars had a hazy glow

like they were in thought.

Headache

Waking up, pounding,

to the pain of pots and pans

banging on the floor.

Parade

The little girl stares

and the parade saunters by

awestruck and silent.

Firework Dog

Unlike his brothers,

the little dog watched the lights

without fear or sound.

Dog Chasing Butterflies (and Other Haikus)

Unseen Branch

I stared at the cracks

in the cement, then, at once,

was smacked by a branch.

Backyard

The dirt in the back

has become a grave for dead

and discarded toys.

Text Speak

r u on ur way

bc ur girl just arrived

and thought ud be here.

Repurposed Toys

What was once a spoon

now bears the eternal weight

of Excalibur.

Dog Chasing Butterflies

His teeth snap the air

as he chases the shadow

of the butterfly.

Dog Food Bowls (and Other Haikus)

Closer to Heaven

Sitting on the roof,

hands resting on the shingles;

legs hanging freely.

Telling Her

Typing the message

was like riding a new bike;

sending was crashing.

A Poem About You

A child at heart,

skipping through the sentences

like they were a stream.

Reminded in Nature

I picked the pink rose,

thinking that its smooth petals

smelled like your perfume.

Dog Food Bowls

I hear them bouncing

against the rigid cement

while the boys run by.

Dogs at the Door (and Other Haikus)

Toothpaste

Tastes like frozen air

as it flows between the teeth;

winter on my tongue.

Looking Outside

A flash of feathers

flies by the open window.

A glimpse of freedom.

Statue Envy

You smile through rain

and stay chipper through winter.

Oh, to be the same.
Temple of Time

Hidden in the mind

is my archaic doorway

and I lost the key.

Dogs at the Door

We started walking

and now when I’m by the door

they come stare at me.

Dog in a Car (and Other Haikus)

The Squirrel

Your bushy tail

cannot hide the stack of nuts

spilling from your nook.

Sore

Like a rubber band

stretched tight between two fingers

just before snapping.

Two Pillows

They lie side by side

on the Victorian sheets

like two slabs of stone.

Twinkle

You looked to the sky,

starstruck by the midnight lights,

and I, by your eyes.

Dog in a Car

I hear you rushing

to look through every window

and see the redwoods.

LOVE POEM #91 – The Feline and the Mutt

The Feline and the Mutt

They stare at each other through the window

briefly, before he leaps against the glass

and she goes running back to the great room

to hide behind the cushions for a bit,

but after he wanders off to go play

she slinks out from her hiding place to watch

as he snaps at fluttering butterflies

passing through the yard for their summer trip.

I think she wonders what it would be like

to feel the warm air against her skin

to jump after their orange patterned wings

and leave those clawless paw prints next to his.

Another Dog (and Other Haikus)

Greeting Strangers

What an expression

peaked out from behind her hat

when I said hello.

Collage

A clip from the news;

a smile from a model,

but eyes full of tears.

Abandoned Tennis Court

Kids crawl through the holes

of the half-torn tennis net

on faded green paint.

College

Stuck in the third row

of my second seminar

counting bio-sheep.

Another Dog

He’s in a leash too,

leading his person down town.

Maybe I’ll say hi.

Sitting Dogs (and Other Haikus)

Text Back

The three blue bubbles

bounce in the left hand corner

bursting with silence.

Fear of the Dark

There’s nobody there.

Nobody in the darkness

clawing at dead things.

Eyes Closed

Walking with eyes closed;

somewhere an ambulance sounds

a sharp reminder.

Looking at the Bar

The circular stains

of an overfilled glass cup

that sat for too long.

Sitting Dogs

Their tails kick dust

when they drag against the dirt,

waiting for dinner.

Dog on a Leash (and Other Haikus)

Legos

My fingers fumble

to click the blocks together.

Where’s the yellow brick?

The Move

Staring at the space

where a sculpture used to stand;

now just an imprint.

Soil

Between specks of dirt

I can hear the solemn songs

of forgotten souls.

Cloud Nine

I forgot I walked

all the way down this hallway

when I held your hand.

Dog on a Leash

You’ve strangled my hand

hoping that for a second

I’d let you escape.
