GALE (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Privacy

I sat on a bench

confessing love, while a bird

watched me from a branch.

Regrowth

The patch of green grass

growing from dead dirt reminds

that life will go on.

Narcissus

They were so busy

staring at their reflections

they missed the white fish.

Disown

A doll made of sticks

lies in shambles in the dirt

as the girl stomps off.

Gale

A wind this restless

engulfs the valley in fear.

Even the stones shake.

LAKEBED (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Lakebed

An empty lakebed

is the memory of life

cracking at the seams.

Messy Desk

Look at the piles

that I let build over time

like half formed towers.

Return Home

Dust lines the doorway

as hosts do at a party,

with cob web banners.

Speckles

The blank, white tiles

were mundane till the artists

speckled them with paint.

Good Night

Dear all seeing moon,

only you may know my life

when the sunshine leaves.

DIVING BOARD (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Window Thoughts

Staring through the pane

to see a magical world

beyond the sunset.

Christmas Town

Carols and cocoa

waft over the merry streets

while children go by.

Goodbye Balloon

Goodbye my red friend.

I found you on a park bench

trying to fly free.

Growth

Towering above

is the bud we planted, back

when I could still see.

Diving Board

Close your eyes, breathe in,

open your arms to the sky,

and savor the fall.

OUR LAST CAT (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Under the blue sky

an image blocks the sunlight:

“Eat like you mean it.”

Leisure

I sit cross-legged

drinking the inspiration

of fresh morning dew.

Crescendo

The drum of fingers

tap against the countertop

waiting for their cue.

Seeing Faces

A face in the grass

smiling in the windy air

blinks out of my sight.

Our Last Cat

He left deep gashes

in the memories of home

carved into the chairs.

DRESS UP (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Out, on a Bench

I forgot the sound

of your delighted laughter

sitting beside me.

Still Life

Water unbroken,

leaves caught, frozen forever,

and me, watching them.

Shooting Stars

A hushed suck of air

fills the boy staring skyward

as streams cross the sky.

Piano Music

The lonely heart beats

slow and solemn to the song

wrote in D minor.

Dress Up

Honeyed cries of joy

call out from the living room

in mismatched clothing.

REGIFT (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Early Morning

Everything’s so loud.

The beat of butterfly wings

sound like broken plates.

Weeds

I forgive the weeds,

they don’t know their little lives

ruined my garden.

Forgotten

In the pale shade,

watching a flustered sunset,

are loves forgotten.

Fetch

Just one throw returned

and already the toy ball

is wet with slobber

Regift

A bag left outside

wilts like a rose in the rain

not knowing her faults.

CAMP OUT (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Messages

The wind came knocking

and the rain left a letter,

but no one answered

Hungry

Rot pays a visit

looking to find a quick bite

in my fruit pantry.

Drowned

Drain another glass

until at long last you drown

all your failures.

Soda Pop

Brown sugar liquid

bubbling an addict’s tune

with an icy kiss.

Camp Out

The rest are away

out on a voyage of dreams.

My eyes sail skies.

UNFINISHED PAINTING (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Playing Outside

Telling the shadows

to stop playing hide and seek

and enjoy the sun.

Cuddling Cats

Cat, when you cuddle,

you claw into my body

like a small lion.

Waiting on Flowers

The wilted flowers

trapped forever in the vase

ask for more water.

Party Crashers

The unwanted guests

brought by my poor friend the ant

ruined our party.

Unfinished Painting

Water shimmering,

clouds colored yellow and orange,

and wind in your hair.

UNDERWATER (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Underwater

Underwater light

looks like glass sheets shattering

over and over.

Oceans of Green

Winds of nostalgia

smell like the waves of the sea

between blades of grass.

Winter Freeze

Wisps of the winter

run shivers through earthen spines.

Huddle close to me.

Rock Quarries

Kindred quarries house

a brotherhood of boulders

awaiting freedom.

Treasures on Trees

Who has need for gold

when trees provide the treasures

of life in their fruits.

ETERNAL PEACE (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Fall Arrives

The spiraling leaves

fall like a patterned sunset

in the autumn sky.

Wet Panic

I hear the wind chimes

scream in a wet panic

from the storm outside.

Eternal Peace

A broken Buddha

lists off, half buried in dirt;

serene as ever.

Butterflies Abound

The butterflies weave

between the fingers of air

like playful lovers

Burnt Out

Melted candles wax

drips like hot blood from the wrists

of this dead marriage.
