DERAILED (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Sympathizers

Wolves ambushed walkers

who were enjoying the day.

They blamed the walkers.

Oppression

The debts have been paid,

and iron shackles removed,

yet they still suffer.

Tunnel Vision

The Cyclops reared back,

blind to the malice he’d forged

by fighting heroes.

Derailed

In dusty ruins

lies the failing of progress:

derailed by pride.

Rooting

Do you think sinners

saw their blasphemy rooting

in their prejudice?

MAGIC LOST (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Magic Lost

Where’d the magic go?

Lost somewhere between the sheets

and the long walk home.

Vices

Take another sip

of that poison you cling to.

Tell me how it burns.

Intellect

For all our knowledge

we worry about days past

more than mindless rocks.

Seabound

If all of the seas

were to close their ports to me,

I’d still wave to you.

A Way Out

If they had forced me

to kill someone, I’d choose to

kill them with kindness.

DOWNPOUR (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Unending

Tick-tock, ‘round the clock.

Do you ever wonder when

the world will stop?

Enjoy

There’s not enough time

in this short life that we live

to not eat good food.

Fantasies

While your mind wanders,

night sets in; but you can still

picture the sunset.

Yard Work

With dust in my pores

and dirt soaking in my hair,

I feel at home.

Downpour

Consume the hatred,

let it flow through you like rain,

but don’t drown yourself.

BOREAS (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Aeolus

When he bagged the winds

the whole world grew silent

and it was quite dull.

Eurus

The wet summer wind

arriving here this early

is unexpected.

Boreas

The shutters slam closed

while the low howl of winter

demands he come in.

Notus

Zucchinis shriveled

as the bountiful gardens

became a desert.

Zephyrus

He greeted their cries

with the tender compassion

of a humble man.

IN CLASS (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

To Class

The crisscrossed brick walk

Is coated in shade, lightly

Spattered by sunbeams.

In Class

Quiet, happy cheers

Of the children running by

Seep through the windows

From Class

Oh, look at that sky!

Bluer than clear Po’ipu.

Now I miss the sand.

Walk Home

Two boys sit in cuffs

With bloodied lips and black eyes.

Look the other way.

Getting Inside

There’s a black widow

Tying a web on the key

I need to get in.

SWAYED (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Foolish

I have found, in love,

That being brave is akin

To being a fool.

Swayed

The Dean Martin Sway

Creates an infectious mood.

Reminds me of you.

Out of Time

The automatic

Ticking of my Burei watch

Is growing slower.

Alliteration

All authors avoid

Alliteration as an

Ant avoids a boot.

Intent

The mind of murder

At the crossroads of passion,

Blistering with hate.

DESERTED (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Tepid at Midnight

How lonely the moon

Hangs tepid in the midnight,

Eons from her sun.

Melody

She never asked me

To write a song about her,

But how could I not?

Deserted

Do you miss the rain?

Your dry, empty, dust-filled coughs

Make me pray for more.
Dare

You’d kiss anyone?

Well Krista, then I dare you

To prove it to me.

Sunrise

Wake before the sun

And watch it rise, glist’ning off

The sweet morning dew.

COMMERCIAL GIRL (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

By the Fountain

Palm trees in the spring

And clear blue summer fountains.

Seagull’s paradise.

Devoured

Buzzing mosquitoes

Evade flailing hands; they are

Eating me alive.

Overheating

Covered in hot sweat;

Wishing I could fall asleep.

This night seems endless

Heart Broken

Every other step

Feels like a thousand tons

When I’m without you.

Commercial Girl

One thousand eyes stared

As I walked you home tonight.

No wonder you asked.

SUMMER WEDNESDAYS (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Summer Wednesdays

The morning grows hot

On this dry summer Wednesday.

Good to be indoors.

Beckoning Waters

The sky blue water

Beckons the thirsty pilgrim

To drown in it’s cold.

Tree Secrets

Scaling up the trees,

I find the grooves in the bark

Hold untold secrets.

Paranoid

When she calls my name

I hear hues of another

Hiding underneath.

Sheltered

Oh, to be a root!

Enjoying the cool soil,

Safe from harms above.

BLOOMS (AND OTHER HAIKUS)

Inspired

My life was hard fought,

But ‘twas my lover who said

To challenge the rain.

Nurturing

The fading twilight

Calls for the dust to settle

‘Fore the wind takes him.

Immovable

The lone river rock

Stands more still than the oak tree

While the water churns.

Pride

The summer sun stands,

Burning paramount today,

With torturous pride.

Blooms

Dear little flower,

Your red petals stand so proud.

Are you ever blue?
