Cold Dog (and Other Haikus)

Paper Cut

A pool of hot blood

pours from the tiny cut

like boiling droplet.

Booth

Red leather cushions

calm ravenous consumers

in a light embrace.

Bus Stop

Hair blown in the wind

with a heavy black suitcase

adorned by her scarf.

Split Lip

The bruise on my lip

is a red and purple mess

bleeding sour tears.

Cold Dog

His howls at the door

are swallowed by the swift winds

as the clouds spit rain.

Cat in a Costume (and Other Haikus)

Carving

A serrated knife

frustrates the happy child

because the blade’s dull.

Pumpkin Seeds

Slick and slimy seeds

cover my hands in orange

as I scoop them out.

Ghost

Who moved my water?

It was on the table, and

now it’s by the sink.

Grave

The air comes so hard

it’s like I’m six feet under

with dirt in my lungs.

Cat in a Costume

Her little black ears

hold up a oversized crown;

her cape drags behind.

Dog Sees a Light (and Other Haikus)

Fish

The scaly grey fish

soar over my sunbaked head

on the summer lake.

Head Down

A fatigued moment

with fried eyes shut tight like gates

against my forearm.

Left

Out on the doorstep

with a draught of frigid air

and a full suitcase.

Vampire

At least then I’d die

when you stabbed me in the heart

with your stake of lies.

Dog Sees a Light

All his muscles tense

as the tiny light flashes

against the brick wall.

Cat on the Counter (and Other Haikus)

Bottles

Upturned on tables

and left abandoned on shelves

dripping their last drops.

Sink

The silver spoon slipped

back into the dish water,

rippling in waves.

Hostile

I don’t mind glaring

when I see them glance my way

from their car windows.

Pocket Coins

A couple of coins

jingling in my jacket

while reaching for keys.

Cat on the Counter

The cup’s a goner,

along with the today’s paper,

‘cause he pawed them both.

Door Dog (and Other Haikus)

Release

A breath like fire

flows as steam through my nostrils

until the heat fades.

Crush

A hundred heartbeats

crammed into half a second

marks when I see you.

Too Much Reading

All the words seem blurred;

the ink blended like black rain

bathing a blank page.

Breakable

Hollow and heart shaped

forged in a hearth just for you.

Please handle with care.

Door Dog

He waits by the door

hoping that I will take him

or he will stop me.

The Cat Insists (and Other Haikus)

Blank Sheet

On the plain table,

the lonely partner sits blank

wanting for his pen.

Doll Eyes

A vortex of black

somehow darker than the shelf

she is standing on.

Leaks

Runaway waters

sneak down the leaky faucet,

scurrying like rats.

Senses

The fluttering red

of the richly colored rose

floats into closed eyes.

The Cat Insists

After three attempts

to return him to the floor,

I cede my lap.

Hungry Dog (and Other Haikus)

Old Shoes

Stained so that the dirt

doesn’t discolor the strings;

rather it dyes them.

No School

The sky looks more blue

and the sun seems to suggest

we go out to play.

Book Ends

The grim lion heads,

cemented with their grey eyes,

oversee the books.

Lungs

Rising and falling

like a feather caught aloft

by a light updraft.

Hungry Dog

His nubby tail

bobs along the tile floor

as he begs for scraps.

Cat Check-Up (and Other Haikus)

Dress Clothes

The dusty dress shirt

hides deep in the dark closet;

for another night.

The Sun

The bells of glory

for the birds, yet drums of hell

for beasts of the night.

Brother at the Door

The knock at the door

followed by happy whistles

marks his returns home.

Monopoly

The friendship ender.

A hotel on Illinois

a dice roll away.

Cat Check-Up

It was afternoon

when the cat scratched at my door

to see why I slept.

Dog in the Dark (and Other Haikus)

Full Heart

Pulsing in my chest,

like a cup overflowing

with bloody loving.

Glassy-Eyed

Confidence worn thin

against the shattering winds;

cracks welling with tears.

Hate

The taste of kinship

soured like spoiled wine;

deep and red with blood.

Creak

“The wood is stretching,

like you or I in our sleep,

searching for comfort.”

Dog in the Dark

The scamper of feet

beating against the shadows

after unseen beasts.

Cat at Midnight (and Other Haikus)

Shelves

The dusty, bent wood

dutifully holds the books

I forgot to read.

Blackbird

Nobody saw her

spreading her dark, tattered wings;

they just scorned her flight.

Children Swimming

Splashing and screaming;

waking up the neighborhood

with sounds of water.

Class Rows

Uniformity

in brown tables and blue chairs

and empty faces.

Cat at Midnight

Two yellow eyes glow,

tensed by unexpected steps

on the dark walkway.
